THE MAKE

What you're actually paying for.

Every piece carries my tag.

When a piece is finished, a solid brass Leather For Real tag is applied — the same mark I would want on something I bought myself. The tag says Leather For Real. Behind it is one person: me, Wilna Meyer.

Full-grain hide, 3 to 3.5 mm, sourced locally. Nothing is sanded off, so it keeps its grain, its marks and its strength. It darkens and softens with use instead of flaking.

Two needles, one seam.

A machine seam is one thread locked against itself. Cut it anywhere, and it runs. A saddle stitch is two needles going through the same hole from opposite sides, so every stitch is locked on its own. If one wears through in ten years, the stitch next to it holds.

Stitching a bag this way takes me most of a day. You can't see that work, but it's the work that decides how long the bag lasts.

It started with my grandfather

I grew up watching my grandfather work leather. Years later I spent a year learning to do it myself, and when I finally made something I was willing to put my name on, Leather For Real started.

I work from my own workshop in the Boland. Every piece is cut, punched and saddle-stitched by me — there is no production line and nobody else at the bench.

01 - Choose, or ask

Order straight from the shop, or send me a message if you want something changed. Most of what I make started as someone's question.

02 - You join the bench

Ten to fifteen working days. Yours goes on when the piece before it comes off, and I'll send you a photo along the way.

03 - It ships to you

I pack it, courier it countrywide and send you the tracking number. Care instructions go in the box.

This tote started with a customer who was tired of her wool snagging in a canvas bag. So it got a lined interior, a slot for the needles and a pocket for the scissors. Tell me what you make, and I'll build around it.

Before you ask - Questions I get most

1. How long does it take?

Ten to fifteen working days from the day you order. Nothing is sitting on a shelf — yours goes on the bench when the piece before it comes off, and I'll send you a photo while it's there.

2. Can you change something about a design?

Yes, and I'd rather you asked. A different strap length, an extra pocket, and a pen slot where you actually want it. Message me and tell me what you carry — most of my designs started exactly that way.

3. Kan ek Afrikaans met jou praat?

Natuurlik. Ek is self Afrikaans. Message me in whichever language is easier for you — die webwerf is in Engels, maar die gesprek hoef nie te wees nie. 4. What leather do you use?

Full-grain hide, 3 to 3.5 mm, sourced locally. It is the outer layer of the skin with nothing sanded off, so it keeps its grain, its marks and its strength. It will darken and soften with use rather than flake.

5. How do I look after it?

Keep it dry, and give it a leather conditioner twice a year. Scratches are part of it — they settle into the patina. Care instructions come in the box.

6. What if something goes wrong with it?

Every piece carries a one-year guarantee against anything that fails in the making. After that, bring it back, and I'll repair it for as long as you own it — I made it, so I know how it goes together. You pay only for materials and the courier. 7. Delivery and returns

I courier countrywide as standard and send you a tracking number. If something is not right, you have 14 days to send it back unused for a repair, an exchange or a refund. Custom and personalised pieces can't be returned, so I check every detail with you before I start.
